Rabbi Abraham D. M. Michaelshvili
Emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe · Director of the Spiritual Center for Georgian Jewry, Tbilisi
Rabbi Abraham Michaelshvili was born in the town of Kulashi, Georgia, into a family from a distinguished dynasty of rabbis who led the Jewish community for several generations. In 1967, at the age of a year and a half, he immigrated to Israel with his parents and family.
In 1985 he traveled to study at the study hall of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in New York. In 1986 the Rebbe asked him to establish the Jewish community that had come from Georgia to New York, and he built, for the first time in history, a grand synagogue for Georgian Jews in the United States, a Jewish school for the community's children, a mikveh and many programs to unite the community.
In 1989 the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Messiah, sent Rabbi Abraham to establish educational and welfare institutions and to strengthen and develop the Jewish communities of Georgia. That year he began his work in Georgia and was appointed Chief Rabbi of Georgia. He helped develop 46 Jewish communities across Israel and established frameworks and institutions for them. The Chief Rabbi of Israel addressed him by that title in a 2006 letter.
Chabad House in Georgia holds prayers, Torah classes and more. Established an elementary school and more.
